My journey on the 03092 train from Barcelona to Madrid was really excellent. As soon as I boarded, I realised how clean and modern the train was. The seats were very comfortable and offered enough space for me to relax and enjoy the journey. The train staff were friendly and attentive, which added to the pleasant atmosphere. I particularly liked the free wifi, which allowed me to work and listen to music without any problems. The sanitary facilities were also in very good condition. The journey was smooth and punctual, so I arrived in Madrid relaxed and in a good mood. I can recommend this connection to anyone who values comfort, reliability and a pleasant service.

The train journey was very pleasant overall. I had a seat with a nice view and the route was really scenic, which made the journey relaxing and entertaining. The service on board was friendly, even if it took a while for someone to get through. It was pleasantly quiet in the carriage, which I really appreciated. The bistro on the train was a good option for a small snack, even if the prices were a little high. The only real criticism was that the wifi was unstable and hardly usable for me, so there's still room for improvement. Otherwise everything was great!

We travelled to the place because we were on holiday and wanted to see Madrid. The connection was the best option because it was the cheapest and also the quickest, although we also had a hire car, the train was still the better option compared to the cost of petrol. We left at 10:00 in the morning and arrived at around 12:00. The train was on time. The journey was pleasant and there was Wi-Fi on board, which we also used. The seats were clean, the toilets were clean and the service on board was very good. The only thing we didn't like was that the air conditioning wasn't on or didn't work.

The train staff were friendly and helped immediately with any questions. Unfortunately, the air conditioning broke down halfway through the journey and it became uncomfortably warm. In addition, the wifi only worked in some of the carriages. Despite this, the journey remained quiet, the train was clean and arrived on time. With better technology, it would have been a very good journey, so there remains a small flaw.

I travelled from Barcelona Sants to Madrid by train in the morning in July and I was absolutely delighted with my journey. All the staff at the station and on the train were super friendly and the toilets and seats on the train were super clean. There was also catering during the journey which was very reasonably priced and delicious. All in all, I can recommend travelling on this train to anyone.

I have used the train from Barcelona to Madrid in many occasions in the last years and my experience with this trip has always been very good. I have used the AVE Renfe, and it takes between 2,30h-3h (depending on the stops) from Barcelona to Madrid. The train is very comfortable and clean. The seat reservation is included in the price. The train also has a bar in the middle with different options for food and beverages. I am very satisfied with this service and I will keep using it.

This trip was great and definitely gets the five stars. A huge praise goes to the service, because my orders were delivered very quickly and my food was very fresh and very tasty. I also found the staff very friendly and the cleanliness of the train. It was also very quiet on the train. I was also very comfortable and well-equipped, including with regard to wifi, as my wifi was very good. In general, a great and also punctual train and at a great price, I pass this trip on.

The train journey was with iryo from Barcelona-Sants to Madrid Puerta de Atocha on train 06210. We booked seat 4A on train number 4. The journey took about 2h45min and was very comfortable, with wide seats and a large table. The catering offer was completely sufficient, soft drinks and small meals were available on board. Everything was clean, including the toilets, top! Unlike in Germany, the train was super punctual and well organised! Price/performance gut👍🏼

I travelled from Barcelona to Madrid with my Interrail ticket. Train number: AVI 9730 Departure: 12:50 Arrival: 15:45 The journey is very fast. The train is very modern and nice and cool. Unfortunately, it was about 10 minutes late. And the train was also quite full.

The journey was very comfortable and we arrived at our destination station in Madrid on time. The journey took 2.5 hours and was very relaxed. The train was in very good condition and it was quiet on the train. I was able to work on the good seats and there were power sockets. I didn't change trains and the train was very clean. The toilet was very clean, a little bit smelly but okay. The staff were super friendly to me.

Disadvantages
IconNot clean
IconNo insight of the staff
I was happy because the train was almost on time. However, the cleaners didn't do a good job. It was very dirty and not hygienic. The staff were not understanding and ignored every attempt to start a conversation. I can only give 3 stars here.

IconDelay
On 10.05.2021 I travelled directly from Barcelona to Madrid on IRY 6131 without changing trains. The journey went smoothly without any complications thanks to the good service. The journey took 3 hours as there was a delay. The facilities were also lacking, there was neither wifi nor power sockets. But it was worth it, as everything was clean and tidy for a low price. However, the toilets were locked, which wasn't a problem as there was an open toilet one carriage further on.
Advantages
IconGood wifi
Disadvantages
IconLoud guests
The train from Barcelona and Madrid departed on time at 13:25. The train had the number 3130 and the journey was possible without changing trains. The journey took around 3 hours, which passed quite quickly as the internet was good enough to get any work done on the laptop without any problems.
Advantages
IconGood seats
Disadvantages
IconPoor air conditioning
Unfortunately, the train with the number 6130 was a little late. The train from Barcelona to Madrid is doable without changing trains, which makes travelling by train very pleasant. The toilets were clean and hygienic, the service provided was great both as the food and the staff who helped me with my questions. In terms of value for money, I can absolutely recommend the ticket because I only had positive experiences.
Advantages
IconGood wifi
Disadvantages
IconStuffy air
The journey from Barcelona to Madrid on 10 June had train number 3122 departing at 12 noon. The general comfort on the train was very good, as were the seats and the wifi, which was also good. The service of the staff was really extremely good as well as the food that you can buy on the train. The journey time was around 3 hours, which passed quite quickly as the train was not delayed, which was very pleasing.
Advantages
IconNice service
Disadvantages
IconHygiene was poor
As on the journey to Barcelona, I also travelled on the AVLO 06301 on the return journey. The view was beautiful again and the service was great. The journey was again very quick at 1.5 hours, but with a slight delay. Unfortunately, the hygiene on the train was even worse this time than on the outward journey, but I can't say whether this was due to the train or the location.
Advantages
IconThe train journey was pleasantly short and saved a lot of time compared to other means of transport.
IconThe train was really modern and I found the seats particularly comfortable.
IconThe departure and arrival times were adhered to exactly, which made my journey easy to plan.
Disadvantages
IconUnfortunately, the internet connection on the train was often unstable and slow, which made it difficult for me to work.
The train journey from Barcelona to Madrid was fine overall. The short journey time was really pleasant, as I was able to commute quickly and comfortably between Barcelona and Madrid. The modern and comfortable seats were particularly positive. The punctuality of the train was also a big plus point for me. However, the wifi connection on the train was disappointingly weak and unstable. Despite this small drawback, I am satisfied with the price-performance ratio.
Advantages
IconClean train

IconEasy ticket ordering
Disadvantages
IconNo seat reservation possible
IconTrain is unfortunately very loud
IconSeats a little old
I booked my ticket in advance online via the Rente website. For this journey, I opted for an economy ticket, which offers more comfort and additional services. My seat was very comfortable. Economy class offers spacious, cushioned seats with reclining backrests and plenty of legroom. Each seat has a power socket so I could charge my mobile phone and there are small folding tables which are ideal for working or eating.

The train journey from Barcelona to Madrid (train number AVE 03908), was absolutely first class. The direct connection took about 2 hours and 30 minutes and the train was on time as expected. The seats were very comfortable and there was enough space to relax and enjoy the journey. The toilets were clean and the whole train made a well-kept impression. The quiet atmosphere on board was particularly pleasant, making it possible to work or relax during the journey. Overall, a very pleasant and fast journey.
Advantages
IconVery punctual
IconWell cleaned
Disadvantages
IconPersonnel
It was a great advantage that the train left Barcelona and arrived in Madrid very punctually. However, to be fair, I have to mention that the staff in Barcelona didn't seem particularly nice or competent to me. The sanitary facilities were very well cleaned and my bench seat with fold-out table was very comfortable. To summarise, this deserves a clear recommendation. The journey took 3 hours. There was no need to change trains.
Advantages
IconFriendly staff
IconQuick and easy reservation
Iconwifi
Disadvantages
IconExpensive
IconSlight delay
IconStains on the armchair next to me
I recently travelled from Barcelona to Madrid with Renfe and found the overall experience positive. I bought the ticket online without any problems and it was possible to reserve my seat directly when booking. The seats were comfortable and offered enough space to relax and enjoy the longer journey. Wifi was available and worked well, so I was able to use the time productively. The train staff were friendly and provided useful information about the stops. Cleanliness was not a problem either - both the carriages and the toilets were in good condition. The train arrived without delay and for the price paid I felt the comfort and facilities were adequate. Overall, a pleasant and stress-free journey that I would book again at any time.

Ouigo

About
SNCF OUIGO is a low-cost train service launched in 2013 by SNCF, the French national railway company. It offers budget-friendly travel on both high-speed (Ouigo Grande Vitesse) and conventional (Ouigo Vitesse Classique) lines in France, and also to Belgium and Spain. OUIGO trains are characterized by a \no-frills\" approach, featuring a single class of seating and minimal onboard amenities to keep ticket prices low. While the high-speed services utilize specially reconfigured TGV trains, Ouigo Vitesse Classique uses older locomotive-hauled rolling stock for even cheaper fares on slower routes."

Barcelona to Madrid by Train: The Easiest, Most Scenic Way to Travel Spain

Introduction

As someone always chasing the smoothest way to explore Spain, the Barcelona to Madrid by train route was an easy yes for my recent trip. If it’s your first time visiting or you’re regularly traveling between the cities for work or fun, this journey feels like part of the adventure and not just a commute. Let me walk you through my first-hand experience and share a few tips to help you plan your own perfect ride.

Route Overview

You can travel from Barcelona to Madrid by train in just 2.5 to 3 hours, covering 620 kilometers (385 miles) with ease between two of Spain’s most dynamic cities.

In my opinion, it’s the best way to get from Barcelona to Madrid if you care about comfort, speed, and scenery. I rode with Ouigo, but you’ll also find Renfe AVE and Avlo high-speed options departing from Barcelona Sants and arriving at Madrid Chamartín Clara Campoamor, which are both easy to reach from the city center.

Transportation Experience

Booking my Barcelona to Madrid train on Omio took all the guesswork out of the process. After quickly comparing prices and times, I went with an early-morning Ouigo for the best value. If you’re debating “Should I take the train or bus from Barcelona to Madrid?”—the train wins for speed, comfort, and views. Flights are quicker in the air, but between airport transfers and security, trains are often just as fast and way more relaxing.

Route Details

Departure & Arrival Stations

Barcelona Sants is a major hub, but easy to navigate—plenty of signs, good coffee, and lots of shops. Arrive early to soak in the energy (and secure a croissant before boarding).
Madrid Chamartín Clara Campoamor is also well-connected, with taxis, metro and bus lines right outside, making your onward Madrid adventure seamless.

Schedule & Frequency

The train journey from Barcelona to Madrid takes just over 2.5 hours, even with a quick stop in Zaragoza. I took a 7:45 AM OUIGO train and arrived in Madrid by mid-morning: it was fast, smooth, and incredibly easy. You’ll find departures nearly every hour, from sunrise to late evening. Mornings offer the best light and fewer crowds, but there are options to fit any schedule.

Onboard Experience & Services

My Second Class Ouigo seat surprised me: roomy, clean, and with handy power outlets for my devices. Ouigo doesn’t offer Wi-Fi, so I recommend downloading podcasts and playlists in advance (the scenery keeps you busy anyway). If you’re after more perks like a café car or quiet zone, check out Renfe’s AVE trains on Omio.

On OUIGO trains between Madrid and Barcelona, each passenger can bring one cabin bag (maximum 55 × 35 × 25 cm) and one small handbag (maximum 36 × 27 × 15 cm) free of charge. Additional or oversized luggage (up to 130 × 90 × 50 cm and 30 kg) can be added for €5 during booking or €20 at the station, so it’s worth planning ahead.
The real highlight, though? Watching Spain fly by with rolling hills, olive groves, and even castles peeking through the window. The route feels like a moving postcard, especially around Zaragoza.

Ticketing Advice & Budget Breakdown

Book early for the best deals. I bought my ticket about 3 weeks ahead for just €15. Here’s what my total trip cost:

Item Cost (EUR)
Ouigo Train Ticket (early booking) €15
Metro to Barcelona Sants €1.50
Coffee & croissant at station café €4
Taxi from Chamartín to my hotel €10
Total €30.50

Looking for more savings? Try Avlo or book non-peak times, and always check for flash deals or promo codes. Find more tips in Omio's Barcelona train station guide.

Top Tips & Recommendations

  • Arrive early at Barcelona Sants to enjoy a coffee and avoid last-minute stress.
  • Choose an upper-deck seat if you can, as the views are next-level.
  • Pack your own snacks, especially on Ouigo, since there’s no food onboard.
  • No Wi-Fi on Ouigo: Download everything ahead of time.
  • If you want extra comfort or amenities, AVE trains are worth the splurge.

Scenic Moments You’ll Remember

One thing I loved about the Barcelona to Madrid train is that you see the landscape shift in real-time, from the coast and city to golden fields, olive groves, and rugged mountains. The early sunlight over Zaragoza was unreal. Even if you’re not a morning person, set your alarm because these views are worth it.

Conclusion

If you’re deciding on how to get from Barcelona to Madrid, this is a great train route. It’s fast and smooth, and it turns the journey into a complete experience. Book your Barcelona to Madrid train with Omio, grab a window seat, and let Spain unfold around you. ¡Buen viaje!
